In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. Colonel Loammi Baldwin (January 10, 1744 – October 20, 1807) was a noted American engineer, politician, and a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. Baldwin is known as the Father of American Civil Engineering. James Fowle Baldwin (1782-1862), the son of Loammi (for whom the Baldwin apple was named) and Mary Fowle Baldwin, was a civil engineer. He helped his brother, Loammi, construct the dry dock at Charlestown Navy Yard. In 1828, he was appointed by the state of Massachusetts as a commissioner to make surveys for a railroad from Boston to Albany, and from 1830 to 1835, he built the Boston and Lowell road.
